CEDAW: Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination  against Women

The inaugural session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination  against Women (CEDAW) was held at the United Nations Office at Vienna in October 1982. One of the major responsibilities of the Committee is to monitor States parties’ compliance with their treaty obligations. The Committee discharges this responsibility in a constructive dialogue with representatives of the State party, based on a report the State submits in accordance with article 18 of the Convention. There are now 185 States parties to the Convention.
