We are pleased to invite you to an exchange with Mr. Guy Ryder,\u00a0Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General<\/a>, which will take place on Friday, 3 November 2023 at 15:30 in Room VIII at the Palais des Nations.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ryder will brief on the preparations for the\u00a0Summit of the Future<\/a>, due to take place in September 2024, and the preparatory ministerial meeting scheduled for this high level week during the UN General Assembly this year. The Summit will produce an inter-governmentally agreed outcome on steps to reinvigorate multilateralism and address gaps and weaknesses in global governance that are impeding our delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals and other commitments, while also preventing our effective response to emerging threats and opportunities. Negotiations are ongoing in the General Assembly on a precise scope for the Summit. The Secretary-General has issued\u00a0a series of Policy Briefs<\/a>\u00a0to provide more detail on certain proposals contained in\u00a0Our Common Agenda<\/em>\u00a0and to support them in their deliberations as they prepare for the Summit of the Future. Mr. Ryder will walk us through the ideas and proposals contained in these briefs.<\/p>\n

Regisseur Ida Does (<\/strong>Nieuw licht<\/strong><\/em>) schetst met haar nieuwe documentaire een beeld van de strijd die hoogleraar Philomena Essed al jaren voert tegen racisme.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Op donderdag 19 oktober is de documentaire\u00a0Alledaagse waardigheid<\/em>\u00a0te zien op NPO 2. De film schetst een portret van antiracisme-pionier Philomena Essed (hoogleraar Critical Race, Gender and Leadership Studies), die veertig jaar geleden\u00a0Alledaags racisme<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 het eerste boek over racisme in het \u2018tolerante\u2019 Nederland – uitbracht. Met prominente figuren als Gloria Wekker, Hellen Felter, David Goldberg, Marion Bloem, prinses Irene en Anja Meulenbelt, en met een nieuwe generatie activisten, onderzoekt\u00a0Alledaagse waardigheid<\/em>\u00a0de betekenis van het werk van Essed. Waarom is antiracisme zo onmisbaar voor het bevorderen van een inclusieve samenleving? En uit welk hout moet je gesneden zijn om dit thema als vrouwelijke wetenschapper en pionier aan te snijden en daar decennialang mee door te gaan? Round Table Ethnic profiling by police in Europe<\/span><\/h4>\n

Ethnic profiling by police in Europe is a widespread form of discrimination that violates international and EU human rights norms. It refers to the use by the police, security, immigration or customs officials of generalisations based on race, ethnicity, religion or national origin – rather than individual behaviour or objective evidence – as the basis for suspicion in directing discretionary law enforcement actions.<\/p>\n

The goal of this round table, co-organised by ENAR, the Open Society Foundations and the European Parliament\u2019s Anti-Racism and Diversity Intergroup, is to have a multi-stakeholder discussion on the problems and experience of ethnic profiling and exchange on good practices towards EU guidelines for fair and efficient policing.<\/p>\n

The context has changed dramatically in the last few years, highlighting the need to better protect minority communities in Europe and improve policing. A number of recent developments would support the need for a renewed discussion at EU level:<\/p>\n

– Terrorist attacks in Brussels, Paris and elsewhere, and the assertions about an elevated terrorism threat have led to the development of counter-terrorism and counter-radicalisation policies which have increased ethnic profiling.<\/p>\n

– Responses to increase in migrants and asylum seekers flux have led to enhanced border controls and stricter return policies towards undocumented.<\/p>\n

– Communities-police relations seem to deteriorate in a context of social protest, counter-terrorism and stricter migration policies.<\/p>\n

– Renewed debates at national level on stop and search practices and solutions, including in France and the Netherlands<\/p>\n

– The Dutch Presidency made inroads on addressing police discriminatory practices by the mention of ethnic profiling in Council Conclusions on the application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and by proposing that the newly created High level Working Group on racism, Xenophobia and other forms of Intolerance would tackle these practices.<\/p>\n

De Verenigde Naties (VN) hebben 2015-2024 uitgeroepen tot International <\/span>Decade for People of African Descent<\/strong> (resolutie 68\/237). Nederland staat achter deze resolutie. Daarom organiseert het Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid deze conferentie die in het teken staat van kennis delen,\u00a0empowerment, samenwerking en verbinding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Het Schaduwrapport<\/a> is achtergrondinformatie voor het Comit\u00e9 dat in zijn de 65ste<\/sup> sessie op donderdag 10 november de (openbare) constructieve dialoog met de regeringsdelegatie van het Koninkrijk heeft.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Daaraan voorafgaand kan het Netwerk op maandag 7 november in een informele openbare sessie van CEDAW een korte \u2018oral intervention\u2019 maken en vragen van Comit\u00e9-leden beantwoorden. CEDAW stelt voor \u2018oral interventions\u2019 10 minuten per verdragsstaat beschikbaar. Nu het Netwerk SEDA Cura\u00e7ao heeft voorgedragen voor gesponsorde deelname zullen we die 10 minuten delen met SEDA.
\nDaarnaast hebben we woensdag 9 november CEDAW leden uitgenodigd voor een informele lunch briefing, waarin we in kunnen gaan op actuele ontwikkelingen en nadere vragen kunnen beantwoorden.<\/p>\n

Om de \u2018oral intervention\u2019 en de informele lunch briefing voor te bereiden organiseren we op vrijdagmiddag 28 oktober een bijeenkomst. Daar willen we gezamenlijk bespreken wat onze prioriteiten zijn om in Geneve naar voren te brengen.
\nGraag nodigen we de ondertekenende organisaties hiervoor uit.<\/p>\n

De bijeenkomst vindt plaats vrijdag 28 oktober 2016 van 14.00 tot uiterlijk 16.30 uur in het gebouw van de FNV bij station Amsterdam-Sloterdijk (Naritaweg 10 1043 BK Amsterdam). Deze lokatie is zowel met openbaar vervoer als met de auto (qua parkeergelegenheid) goed bereikbaar. Na afloop zijn er sapje, drankjes en wat hapjes\/knabbels.<\/p>\n

3 – 14 October: 11th Session, Committee on Enforced Disappearances<\/strong>
\nAt its forthcoming 11th session on 3-14 October 2016, the Committee on Enforced Disappearances will examine the efforts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia to implement the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance:<\/p>\n

The Committee will also adopt lists of issues on the reports submitted by Cuba, Ecuador and Senegal.

\nThe opening of the 71st session of the General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) will take place on 3 October 2016 (10:00 to 13:00) in Conference Room 2 (CB) at UN Headquarters in New York. A keynote address will be delivered by Ms. Dambisa Moyo, a global economist and author who analyzes the macroeconomy and international affairs whose most recent book was\u00a0Winner Take All: China\u2019s Race for Resources and What it Means for the World<\/em>. The joint meeting will focus on “The Changing Political Economy of Globalization: Multilateral Institutions and the 2030 Agenda”, and will highlight recent trends in globalization that have exposed various fault lines in responses at the national and international levels. 13 – 14 October: High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport of Landlocked Developing Countries<\/strong>
\nThe High-level Meeting on Sustainable Transport of LLDCs will review the progress made by LLDCs, as well as challenges in the development and maintenance of efficient, reliable and sustainable transport systems, and the linkages between the Vienna Programme of Action for LLDCs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the area of transport. It will identify new strategies, cooperation initiatives and policy recommendations on how to develop and further improve transit transport systems for the benefit of the LLDCs, strengthen cooperation, enhance mobilization of financing for infrastructure development and maintenance and promote sustainable transport in the LLDCs. The recommendations of the meeting are expected to contribute the perspectives of the LLDCs into the first global sustainable transport conference to be held from 26-27 November 2016 in Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be attended by the Ministers of Transport of LLDCs. Ministers of transport of transit developing countries and selected development partners, as well as representatives of the UN system, other international, regional and sub-regional organizations and financial institutions, the private sector, NGOs and other stakeholders will also be invited to participate at senior official level.<\/p>\n

17 – 20 October: United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III)<\/strong>
\nHabitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, taking place in Quito, Ecuador, 17\u201320 October 2016.<\/p>\n

In Resolution 66\/207 and in line with the bi-decennial cycle (1976, 1996 and 2016), the United Nations General Assembly decided to convene the Habitat III Conference to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urbanization, to focus on the implementation of a New Urban Agenda, building on the Habitat Agenda of Istanbul in 1996. Member States of the General Assembly, decided that the objectives of the Conference are to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable urban development, assess accomplishments to date, address poverty, and identify and address new and emerging challenges. The Conference will result in a concise, focused, forward-looking, and action-oriented outcome document.<\/p>\n

The Conference welcomes the participation and contributions of all Member States and relevant stakeholders, including parliamentarians, civil society organizations, regional and local government and municipality representatives, professionals and researchers, academia, foundations, women and youth groups, trade unions, and the private sector, as well as organizations of the United Nations system and intergovernmental organizations.

\nUnited Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene the first-ever Global Sustainable Transport Conference from 26-27 November 2016 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n

The Conference will be held at the highest level and will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, the private sector, and civil society to engage in dialogue that emphasizes the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable transport. All modes of transport – road, rail, aviation and maritime – will be addressed as well as transport both in urban and rural areas, energy and transport, public transport, countries in special situations, road safety, and financing for sustainable transport, as well as finding a new paradigm for transport sustainability.<\/p>\n

NGO representatives will be able to attend conference plenaries, intervene in the round tables, subject to the availability of time, and organise side events.

Workshops on Action Planning for Open Government Data for Sustainable Development in Latin America and Asia<\/strong>
\nThe workshops, held in\u00a0Santiago, Chile from 26 to 28 September<\/a> and\u00a0Bangkok, Thailand from 3 to 6 October<\/a>, promote exchange of information on Open Government Data (OGD) National Strategies and National Action Plans in support of access to information to support sustainable development policies.<\/p>\n

The workshops are organized as part of the DPADM project on \u201cStrengthening of Capacities of Developing Countries to Provide Access to Information for Sustainable Development through Open Government Data\u201d. The project aims at developing a strategy for creating and utilising open data, particularly in thematic areas relevant to the 2030 Agenda. Through the sharing of experiences and lessons learned, participants enhance their capacities of developing an OGD Action Plan for successful implementation of the SDGs. The workshops also provide an opportunity to review OGD strategies in collaboration with regional peers and experts.<\/p>\n

The effects of OGD utilization are potentially far reaching for sustainable development with positive impact on innovation, transparency, accountability, participatory governance as well as economic growth and social progress. By opening data, people are more directly informed and engaged in decision-making. Governments can enhance transparency and accountability not only through better access, but also through the proactive sharing and reuse of public information.<\/p>\n

The workshop in Chile is organized by DPADM\/DESA and ECLAC, whilst the workshop in Bangkok is organized by DPADM\/DESA and ESCAP.<\/p>\n

Role of Governance and All Stakeholders in Mobilizing ICTs for Sustainable Development<\/strong>
\nDPADM\/DESA is organizing a side-event of the Second Committee on\u00a0“The Role of Governments and All Stakeholders in Mobilizing ICTs for Sustainable Development”<\/a> on 13 October in New York. This event will serve as a platform for participants to (i) reflect on how to mobilize all actors to put ICT in the service of the poor; (ii) exchange experiences and lessons on how Governments and other actors can mobilize ICT for realizing the SDGs; (iii) identify priority actions and possible approaches for the implementation of the outcome of WSIS+10 and the 2030 Agenda; (iv) exchange ideas on how to maximize the role and impact of public authorities in putting ICTs at the service of sustainable development. Participants will include delegations from Member States of the United Nations as well as representatives of civil society, the private sector and international organizations.<\/p>\n

DESA Publications<\/strong><\/p>\n

Partnerships on Small Island Developing States 2016<\/strong>
\nThe first annual Global Multi-stakeholder SIDS Partnership Dialogue was held on 22 September 2016 during the 71st session of the General Assembly as a High-level Breakfast Event, focusing on the launch of new partnerships devoted to SIDS, and the announcement of new commitments from existing SIDS partnerships.<\/p>\n

The Dialogue is an integral of the SIDS Partnership Framework which was launched by the General Assembly in 2016 as a follow-up to the SIDS Conference, held in Samoa in 2014. The Framework is one of a kind at the United Nations in following up and monitoring progress of voluntary commitments from multi-stakeholder partnerships aimed at driving sustainable development in Small Island Developing States.<\/p>\n

The event was hosted by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives and H.E. Mr. Vincenzo Amendola, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Italy, represented by H.E. Mr. Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy, in collaboration with UN-DESA and UN-OHRLLS, and was attended by over 100 participants from governments, UN entities, civil society representatives, and focal points of SIDS partnerships from all regions of SIDS.<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the event, Mr. Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs launched a publication on Partnerships for SIDS, which was the result of a review of 40 partnerships devoted to the sustainable development in SIDS. Mr. Wu noted that the follow-up of the SAMOA Pathway is also an integral part of the High-level Political Forum, which is the central platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n

Dit event is onderdeel van een training die valt onder de Clingendael Conflict Negotiation Facility – een initiatief van Clingendael gefinancierd door het Nederlands Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken (BZ). De training genaamd \u201cNegotiation and Mediation as a Conflict Resolution Instrument\u201d is bedoeld voor senior mediators vanuit heel Afrika. Zij hebben op verschillende manieren te maken met mediatie: als adviseur, als inside mediator, of als mediator in internationaal of nationaal conflict. De groep is eerder bij elkaar geweest tijdens trainingen georganiseerd door het Zuid-Afrikaanse BZ, de Afrikaanse Unie en UNWomen. In dat kader werd eerder ook al de African Women Mediation Forum opgericht – ter ondersteuning en versterking van de rol van vrouwen in vredesprocessen.<\/p>\n

De training heeft twee hoofddoelstellingen 1) de capaciteit van de vrouwen vergroten om succesvol op te treden als mediator in conflicten en 2) de institutionalisering en het beleid van de African Women Mediation Forum verder ontwikkelen.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve only got 44 days left to collect signatures for our European Citizens\u2018 Initiative (ECI) against TTIP and CETA!<\/strong> The one-year collection phase – that all ECIs have according to EU rules – ends on 6 October. The success we have had so far is something to be proud of:\u00a0just today, we surpassed the 2.5 million mark!<\/strong><\/p>\n

How many more signatures can we collect by 6 October?<\/strong> A lot, if everyone contributes! Imagine every signatory gets just one extra person to sign: we could double our signature count. Unfortunately, it isn\u2019t quite so simple because we can \u2018only\u2019 reach about 350,000 people with this newsletter. Tell us how many signatures you pledge to collect by 6 October<\/strong><\/a>, so we have a rough overview. Simply use our online form to do so.<\/p>\n

Ask your friends on\u00a0Facebook<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0Twitter<\/strong><\/a> to sign the ECI.<\/p>\n

Print off a signature sheet<\/strong><\/a> in your language and get at least one other person to sign.<\/p>\n

If you still have any completed signature sheets at home,please send them promptly!<\/strong> (The return address can be found at the bottom right of the sheet.)<\/p>\n

In case you need help with the arguments against TTIP, we have put together some useful materials on our website (available in 8 languages). As well as the\u00a03-minute-info<\/em><\/strong>, you can find a\u00a0brand new timeline<\/strong> for TTIP, CETA and our ECI.<\/a><\/p>\n

There\u2019s much more to do by 6 October. We need to demonstrate to the EU institutions and our national decision makers how many people oppose the TTIP and CETA treaties.\u00a0We need to protect our democracy, environment, public services as well as the rights of workers and consumers! <\/strong>Please help to make the ECI a massive success!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Training on Gender Mainstreaming in public policy and in project cycle management.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The training will focus on tools, strategies and skills to implement European projects and programmes with a gender equality perspective.<\/p>\n

This is a great opportunity to update your knowledge and to improve your skills on gender mainstreaming. The\u00a0training<\/a> will be participatory, dynamic, and based on real cases. You can express your preference for a particular sector, and also bring your own case or projects to review these during the course.<\/p>\n
